The following is a guide to the paranormal and crypto zoology. I will try to update, correct and add source information (I apologize for the lack of sources, I wrote a lot of this when I was younger and a lot of it long after seeing or reading source, if you know where information came from please inform me. I desire to give due credit. Much of this is common information, but I know that not all of it is and should like to have those sources.)

Vampires
(derivative of vampyr, vampyre)
A vampire by definition is one who feeds on blood or people fear. It has been narrowed down to mean only dead people that rise from the grave to suck the blood of mortals, but only after being narrowed down to mean werewolves and the latter.
The original definition included children born with teeth (or sometimes hair), witches of any sort, seventh sons of seventh sons (that’s twice the number of perfection), werewolves, lunatics, those that possessed the evil eye and more. Most vampires now resemble Dracula, a blood-sucking demon, who returned each to his coffin to draw energy from the soil (stoking as some fanatics call it). Stoker's Dracula was specifically a nosferatu.
Defenses against such modern vampires include wearing garlic or crosses, setting up mirrors for vampires have no reflection and hate to be reminded, and sleeping with a covered neck. Also one looks for the signs that another is a vampire; scars on the neck, lack of aging, no reflection and no shadow for vampire is a reflection and a shadow, aversions to garlic, sunlight, silver, and water, and lastly the inexplicable gathering of grave dust around them.
To ward off a vampire one commands them while holding silver or a cross. To disable them one places a wild rose branch over their coffin while they are inside, or seals it up with holy ash or clay. Also one may chain them with silver chains or wire. To kill a vampire one must drive a stake or arrow through the heart or shoot it through coffin and in the heart with a silver bullet. Actually any sharp object is said to do.
Stoker, Bram. Dracula.
