The following is a guide to the paranormal and crypto zoology. I will try to update, correct and add source information (I apologize for the lack of sources, I wrote a lot of this when I was younger and a lot of it long after seeing or reading source, if you know where information came from please inform me. I desire to give due credit. Much of this is common information, but I know that not all of it is and should like to have those sources.)
Key:
* Commonly believed phenomenon or creature in certain regions
** Commonly believed phenomenon or creature
*** Proven phenomenon or creature
**Jack
Jack is the most evil character ever and this is what I to be the better version of the tail. Jack was a Dutchman so evil even the devil didn’t like him. One night Jack got lost in the woods and the only soul he ever ran across was the devil whom he asked for help. The devil only threw a hot coal at him. Jack thinking quickly pulled up a nearby turnip and cut some holes in it. Then stuffing the coal inside used it to light his way home. That was the first Jack’s lantern or Jack-o’-lantern.
In the more common (and more likely original version) Irish version Jack, a drunkard, is eating a turnip in an orchard (as if there’s nothing better to eat in an orchard.). The devil comes for his soul. Jack climbs the nearest tree. The devil follows him; Jack jumps out and carves a cross in the tree so the devil can’t get down. The devil then curses Jack to wanders forever with the turnip for his lantern.
When Dutch and Irish children came to America (where there were no turnips) they made other vegetable lanterns, to ward off evil spirits, choosing the large pumpkins as their favorite.
